We are beyond blessed to be home. It is amazing how easily it is to take the little, life luxuries for granted. For example, a bed - Mom is happy to be back at home in a bed of her own instead of a hard pullout chair. Barefoot, walking around a house with no shoes or just socks is sometimes priceless … and something that cannot be done in a hospital room, gross! A patio - oh the greatness of being able to simply step outside for a minute or two for fresh air without having to track down a nurse to open an elevator, walk down long sterile hallways, to finally getting to the outer doors of a hospital. There are tons more that we are truly grateful for to have at home after a long 7 months.
Isaiah 32:18 My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
Indeed we are home, but the journey of healing and recovery is not over. Do not forget about Ryan. He still needs BIG prayers and your relentless faith that he will undergo a COMPLETE restoration. Remind God of his promise as it states in Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Being at home gives us new battles and trials. Things are much different and we ask that prayers and patience will be given to us as we take care of Ryan 24/7. He is still struggling with aggression. Visitors often do not see this aggression because he does very well around friends. Although, it is an everyday battle and it makes it very difficult to complete the daily, necessary tasks to keep Ryan healthy. Feeding, bathing, sleeping, getting dressed, staying hydrated, wearing braces, and many other necessities often become a challenge due to Ryan's aggression. Doctors are still working on adjusting the aggression along with his tremors in Ryan's left arm and shoulder. I believe that most of the aggression stems from his own frustration of not being able to do routine skills that he used to be able to do on his own. He is wanting independence, but unfortunately his tremors make is very difficult at this time for him to complete these on his own. I pray that the medicine for the tremors will soon begin to work and in turn, Ryan's aggression will lessen due to the fact that he will be able to complete some everyday skills on his own, allowing him some independence. As an effect of his traumatic brain injury, emotions become extreme at this step in the recovery, which is not unusual. This means, when he becomes upset or mad, due to being a TBI patient, his brain has difficulty controlling or even calming down these feelings; basically all emotions are at an extreme right now. Please continue to pray for these tribulations as we continue the journey of Ryan's miracle and testimony of our Great Father!
Ryan always seems to do things that surprises us though. There are many things that he does not remember and even though his short-term memory is getting stronger, it is still a struggle. Although, Ryan wanted to watch NBA TV but we could not remember what channel it was. He quickly typed out on his keyboard two sixteen. AMAZING the things that he remembers! :) We know that Ryan's short-term memory is becoming stronger because everyday he asks us when people are coming over ( in reference to his homecoming party). Unfortunately, he does not remember the party we had for him on Saturday, but the silver lining and the blessing we hold onto is it that he remembers that he was having a party! It might seem small to you, but it huge for us. This means his memory is strengthening and I know that he will not suffer from this forever.
My family and I want to thank everyone that joined us in celebration of Ryan's homecoming. We were surrounded by amazing family and friends to honor God's work and the miracle that sits in front of us. We are grateful for the prayers and support of everyone. God is glorified as we come together and pray in His name, give Him thanks, and speak His work and love in our everyday conversations-often times with pure strangers. Psalm 107:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Ryan will be evaluated at TIRR Memorial Hermann in the Woodlands on Tuesday for outpatient therapy of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. They will then inform us of the times and the amount of days he will be receiving therapy each week.
Here are pictures from Ryan's homecoming party last Saturday, June 28. If you took any pictures, please email them to me at [email protected] - we would love to have them and show them to Ryan to help his memory. Thank you again to everyone who came to celebrate our Buddy!
